Welcome to Wisbech St Mary Short Mat Bowls Club

Welcome to the website.

The club meets in the Wisbech St Mary Sports and Community Centre is located in the village of Wisbech St Mary on the Cambridgeshire border. Members meet on a Monday evening between 6.45 and 9.00 pm.  We treat our roll up evenings as social evenings where the game is to be enjoyed and comes complete with a laugh with tea/coffee and biscuits at our half time interval.  The first 2 sessions for new members are free

Short Mat Bowls

If this is a game you have not played before here is a brief overview.  Short mat bowls is played on a portable mat which is between 40 and 45 feet and 6 feet wide.  It is played indoors and does not need a permanent area.

You bowl to a smaller ball called the jack or cot and the object of the game is to get your woods (bowls) nearer to the jack than the opposition.  However this involves skill and tactical knowledge which is gained the more you play.

The ESMBA is the national body for the sport and was formed in 1984 and now has approx 20,000 members.  We currently have nearly 20 clubs in Cambridgeshire with approx 400 members

Bowls is an good way to keep fit and can be played by all ages
